The department adds languages to the online filing portal, receiving community feedback.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released its updated language access plan as well as a number of steps it has already taken to offer additional languages throughout its services.
President Joe Biden signed an executive order last year directing his administration to update all their language access plans, some of which have not changed in a decade. DHS pledged to offer case filing options for those with limited English proficiency and is already in communication with language community leaders to ensure their multi-language services are both usable and high-quality.
“In the decade since the Department issued its first Language Access Plan, it has reduced barriers to utilizing DHS programs, further supported workforce in public-facing roles, and deepened engagement with diverse communities nationwide,” said Civil Liberties Officer Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia. “Our office is honored to have worked with DHS Components to meet their language access obligations and, with these updates, put a strong overarching plan in place to guide the Department.”
